Spotlight Teacher
Helen Myler Benson
Helen Myler Benson is a seasoned veteran teacher of 25 years who teaches TLC at Grand Middle School. Helen teaches a subject she loves and says, "My greatest thrill is to watch the students become really excited about learning!"
Helen was born in Wendell, Idaho and raised on a farm in the Magic Valley Area. She graduated from BYU in 1971 with a BS in Home Economics and began her teaching career at San Juan High School. Helen married in 1972 and moved to Moab with her husband, Darrell. He and their two daughters, Holly and Amber all graduated from Grand County High school. Then in 2008 they moved to Old LaSal. She has three grandchildren and spends most of the summer spoiling them. "They are the light of my life!" she affirms.
Helen has been to Europe twice, once for a complete summer. While there, she traveled to Denmark, Germany, and Italy. She loved everything about the time spent in Europe.
In 2008, she and her husband, Darrell, helped a former student of hers build a master crafted log cabin. "What a wonderful experience to work with him and about 12 other former students of mine!" she said.
This past year 2010, Darrell, Jerry Hansen, Stanley Noorlander and several others helped her clean, paint, and organize the shop area of her school. It was an exciting project, and she learned a lot from the people with whom she worked.
